Abstract
After 1959, the Tibet issue became an important topic for India to explain the changes in its relations with China. Indian official documents, Nehru's speeches and relevant reports in The Hindustan Times show that while the Indian authorities recognized China's sovereignty over Tibet, they emphasized Tibet's autonomous rights. When autonomy, refugees and northern border security were linked, China's actions in Tibet were given the implication of changing the regional status quo. Newspapers used terms such as "oppression" and "aggression" to further extend the situation in Tibet into a threat to Asian neighboring countries. The colonial-era legacy of the buffer state concept and the political disputes in the Sino-Indian border dispute provided background conditions for the narrative of "Chinese expansion".
