Abstract

Generative artificial intelligence is reshaping how university students retrieve information, produce texts, and solve problems, yet its influence on critical thinking is neither simply positive nor negative. To examine the differentiated effects of various usage patterns, this study conducts a questionnaire survey of university undergraduates. Generative AI use is divided into four dimensions: use frequency, reflective use, answer dependence, and information verification, and multiple linear regression is employed for empirical analysis. The study focuses on whether frequent use is equivalent to high-quality use, whether reflective use and information verification positively predict critical thinking, and whether answer dependence has a negative effect. Drawing on the dual perspectives of cognitive tools and cognitive offloading, this study concludes that the key factor influencing university students’ critical thinking is not whether they use AI, but whether they retain such cognitive activities as prior thinking, evidence verification, comparative questioning, and reflective revision. The findings provide practical implications for AI literacy courses, assignment design, and process-based assessment in higher education.
