摘要

19世纪科学的发展深刻影响着乔治·艾略特的创作思想。她将观察、分析和因果推理等科学方法融入现实主义小说写作，小说人物处于遗传、环境、家庭和社会关系构成的复杂网络之中，揭示个体与社会的相互依存关系。艾略特通过家庭、地方共同体和自然景观等意象建构有机社会观，反思工业化与个人主义带来的社会问题。然而，艾略特并未陷入生物决定论，而是将科学理性与同情、想象力和道德责任相结合。本文认为，科学思想、有机社会观与伦理关怀的融合，构成了艾略特现实主义创作的重要特征，体现了她对个人、社会与现代性关系的深刻思考。

Abstract

The development of science in the nineteenth century exerted a profound influence on George Eliot’s literary thought. She incorporated scientific methods, including observation, analysis, and causal reasoning, into her realist fiction. By situating her characters within complex networks shaped by heredity, environment, family, and social relationships, Eliot reveals the interdependence between the individual and society. Through such images as the family, the local community, and the natural landscape, she constructs an organic conception of society and reflects critically on the social problems caused by industrialization and individualism. Eliot, however, does not succumb to biological determinism. Instead, she combines scientific rationality with sympathy, imagination, and moral responsibility. This article argues that the integration of scientific thought, an organic conception of society, and ethical concern constitutes a defining feature of Eliot’s realist writing and demonstrates her profound reflections on the relationships among the individual, society, and modernity.
