The creative background of The Temple of the Golden Pavilion is rooted in the spiritual desolation and collapse of values in postwar Japanese society. Mishima Yukio, drawing on the real incident in which Hayashi Yoken set fire to the Golden Pavilion, extends the concept of “ruin” from the material level to the spiritual dimension. From the perspective of ruin aesthetics, one can examine the dual nature of the Golden Pavilion in the novel, which possesses both materiality and symbolism. Mizoguchi’s burning of the Golden Pavilion is in fact an act of actively creating ruins, while Mishima’s narrative deliberately omits the scene of the great fire, reducing destruction to plainness, thereby highlighting the suspension of freedom at the moment the ruins are generated. In the end, the Golden Pavilion is reduced to ashes, and Mizoguchi speaks the words “I want to live,” achieving the ultimate beauty of ruins and spiritual reconstruction.
