Abstract

Throughout the contemporary writing of elegy, Louise Glück’s postmodern mourning is tinged with her stoic poetics of austerity. Her poems dismantle traditional elegiac forms by refusing both consolation and lyric sentimentality. This paper seeks to explore such an elegiac writing through her mourning in collections Ararat (1990), one of Louise Glück’s most autobiographical collections on familial tensions, and Averno (2006), a post-9/11 volume in which individual trauma swells into that of a communal one. Rather than presenting trauma as a narrative of personal triumph or growth, Ararat and Averno both mourn through the refusal to deny trauma in different ways—bareness and substitution, tracing death and the violence embedded in it and deeming trauma as an immutable fact. Thus, the Romanticist’s transcendence remains deferred, not realized in her mourning. Ultimately, Glück’s elegiac poems function not to heal, but to hold space for the unhealable. By seeing through the illusions of sentimental healing, Glück challenges the elegiac tradition in a form of witness: one that neither commemorates nor resolves, but starkly defers and suspends.
