With the rise of short-video platforms, dance has increasingly shifted from relatively complete works to short segments lasting between ten and thirty seconds. Focusing on dance challenges on Douyin, this study examines how such segments are extracted from choreographic works and transformed into reusable templates, and how this process reshapes user participation. The analysis draws on publicly available participation and viewership data, as well as interviews with dance participants and bloggers. Framed by Henry Jenkins’s theory of participatory culture and Harmony Bench’s work on social dance and media, the study argues that the shortening of dance is not merely a reduction in duration, but a fundamental shift in the unit of circulation, creative logic, and the relationship between viewer and performer. Segments that are highly recognizable, easy to imitate, and closely aligned with musical rhythms are more likely to be extracted, taught, reproduced, and circulated as templates. This gives rise to a “shortening–templatization–participation” mechanism, through which users increasingly move from viewers to imitators, re-creators, and disseminators, thereby endowing dance with stronger participatory and social dimensions.
